We have tried paying our trainers 3 ways.

1) Fixed Hourly Pay ($18-$30 per hour training)

2) Performance Pay Based On How Many Clients Are Training ($10 base + $3-$5 for every client training in a group)

3) Performance Based On Revenue Generated (% taken from revenue on training)

And...

If you think 2 and 3 are the best option because they will incentivize your trainers to help grow your business...

Well then keep reading...

Because I might surprise you.

What we have found after testing this across our 33 gyms is that what intrinsically motivates trainers is not what you think...

You might think by nature all team members are motivated by money.

But you are wrong and so were we.

What we found was that paying our trainers on a cost-per-client base didn't motivate them to get more people in their sessions.

What they care more about is simply training and seeing their clients make life-changing results.

This is what keeps them motivated and internally fulfilled.

Not how much money they are making.

This is why performance-based pay with trainers may not be the best fit.

And if anything, creates more uncertainty and chaos for them.

The other thing I learned is it creates more stress and uncertainty for you as the business owner.

Because you don't know what payroll looks like each month.

And are essentially playing the "guessing game".

And we all know how that usually ends up...

This is why we now only pay our trainers on a fixed hourly rate.

The trainers love it because it gives them stability in knowing what they are going to get paid.

And...

As a business, we know each and every month exactly how much is coming out of our pocket with payroll.

Which is huge because you can budget and allocate funds predictably.

Without playing the "guessing game".

And not think you are going to be in the hole month after month.

P.S. Notice how when we tested this it wasn't about what we as the company wanted, but as what the trainer wanted. The benefits for us were a result of what they wanted. Keep that in mind!
